A Delicious and Sweet Treat to Celebrate Happy Occasions

Food is an integral part of culture and a delicious way to experience the culture. It also connects us to our ancestral heritage, as recipes are passed down from generation to generation.

With this, we also wanted our little learners to taste our shared heritage, so we made glutinous rice balls to culminate our month-long Chinese New Year celebration. It is a traditional Chinese dessert commonly served on joyous occasions like Chinese New Year, Lantern Festival, and other family gatherings. With their round shape and sticky texture, they symbolize unity, togetherness, and reunion.

Sticky Dough Makes Our Family Stick Together

After learning more about the significance of glutinous rice balls in Chinese culture, our little learners embarked on the challenge of making glutinous balls despite the stickiness of the dough. They made the balls with determination and love as they wanted to share them with their family.

Floating Balls

Step two was to cook the balls! Our little learners dropped the glutinous rice balls into the boiling water. They waited patiently and were rewarded with delight as they watched the dough float onto the surface!

Bringing Home Their Glutinous Rice Balls Made with Love

Of course, the best way to eat glutinous rice balls was to eat them with the family, so they were excited to show their parents and share the dessert they made with them. Oh, what a delicious way to end our celebration of the Chinese New Year! This activity allowed everyone to experience and share the culture with their family and loved ones!
