Discovering Our Unique Selves

As the school once again opened its doors to our little learners, we embarked on an exciting journey of self-exploration. Our goal was to help our students learn more about themselves and begin building their own unique identities.
Let Our Chinese Names Blast Off
One key identity we wanted the children to associate with is being members of the Filipino–Chinese community. And what better way to start than by familiarizing them with their Chinese names? We introduced them to their Chinese names and tried to call them using these names. We also let them match the characters of their names and hopefully appreciate the uniqueness of each one.
A Keepsake to Cherish
Understanding their age helps children grasp the concept of growth. Our Pre-kindergarten students discussed celebrating birthdays and turning a year older. To create a special memory, we made simple keepsakes of their age—handprints they can look back on with pride.
Are You a Boy or a Girl?
Aside from familiarizing themselves with their Chinese names and age, we introduced our preschoolers to the simple concept of gender. They tried to label themselves as either boys or girls. We also emphasized that their gender should not limit them. Girls can also wear pants and shorts like boys, and boys can also enjoy playing with dolls like girls. This discussion encouraged them to understand and embrace their individuality.
Through these activities, the children learn about important aspects of their identity and gain a deeper appreciation for themselves and their peers. Let’s all embrace and celebrate our unique selves!
